Flying in the Comfort
Zone is designed for immediacy of use and ease of use. As you
will see from the Table of Contents, the problem of self control is dealt with
first and foremost. The material presented in the first four lessons of
the book (only 19 pages) underpins the rest of the entire text. We get
right to the point! Then we keep making the point throughout the rest of
the text and in all the "fear facts" and "aviation facts" we
cover. Each lesson asks you to learn something that will assist your
efforts at mastery. As you learn you will be building a formidable wall of
new coping mechanisms and new perceptions. It is this wall that will serve
your efforts at fear mastery. Examine closely the contents of the text, as
they are both excerpted directly from the book as well as elaborated upon by the
author
Anxiety Management Lessons

 |
Lesson Number Two -
Your Muscles and Your Anxiety -
"your muscles will lead the way"- a lesson in anxiety management. |
 |

of getting, keeping and losing anxiety.
What you can expect from you body and what you can't. |
 |
Lesson Number Four -

Aircraft Knowledge Lessons
 |
Lesson Number Five -
Anatomy of an Airplane. This section, completely illustrated, will
change the way you look at an airplane. |
 | Lesson Number Six -
Aerodynamics for Fearful Flyers - This section will first help you confront
your misperceptions about how airplanes fly and also explains how you
have those misperceptions in the first place. It then presents
nine different flight (fright?) situations that cause anxiety and explains how
to cope differently in order to stop the anxiety. |
 | Lesson Number Eleven - The Flight Deck,
Flight Safety and The Safety of Flight - This section
de-clutters the flight deck, making the pilot's job much clearer in the eyes
of the fearful flyer. Material is then presented on the multitude of
safety practices inside the aviation system. This material includes
material on safety standards for: 1) pilots; 2) airplanes; 3) airspace
and 4) airports. With the fearful flyer in mind, each subject
addresses a subject that could be a source of flight anxiety. This
section also presents safety data, dramatically demonstrating just how well
the aviation system works! |
Self Knowledge Lessons
 |
Lesson Number Seven
- Couch Talk for Fearful Flyers. This lesson helps you to make sense
out of your flight anxiety in a very personal way. Beginning first
with a lesson on self analysis, Lesson Seven walks you through 11
psychological problems that can contribute to the fear of flying - with
suggestions for coping differently with each problem. Special
attention was given to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in this Lesson. |
 | Lesson Number Nine - Anti-anxiety
Medication, Alcohol and Hypnosis - In November 2000,
Airborne 2000, an international Fear of Flying Conference convened in
Vienna, Austria, unanimously recommended against the use of medication and
alcohol as a defense against the fear of flying. This lesson explains
why and makes specific recommendations about when and why these substances
should not be used. Limitations on the effects of hypnosis are also
detailed here, with recommendations for the most effective hypnotic
suggestions, if hypnosis is used as part of fear of flying treatment. |
 | Lesson Number Ten - Fear and Anger - If
you are among the millions of individuals who become outwardly angry when
afraid, this lesson is a must! Not only does this lesson cover, in
depth, the reasons an individual acts abusively when afraid, it also details
how this problem can be changed. Your won't find this chapter in any
other fear of flying book. It can save the victim of this problem from
a lot of grief, inconvenience and embarrassment! |
 | Lesson Number Twelve - Coping with
"what if?" - The goal of this lesson is to
help you come to the conclusion that overcoming your fear of flying is
worthwhile, even if you should, someday, be killed in an airplane
crash. Step by step, this chapter guides you through the very real
consequences of overcoming vs. not overcoming your fear of flying. As
the lesson concludes, and after you write your personal epitaph, the
conclusion of the value of overcoming the fear of flying is unmistakable and
clear! |
Turbulence
 |
Lesson Number Eight
- Turbulence - Turbulence
during flight is perhaps the single most potent trigger for the fear of
flying. For this reason, we have given a special lesson on this
subject. The chapter begins with, "There is not an air pocket
in the air without a myth in it!" By the time you finish this
chapter, you will not only know that there are no air pockets, you will
believe it too! Applying the lessons in this section will allow you to
drastically reduce or eliminate your anxiety while riding through
turbulence. |
