Until recently, programs for fearful flyers depended heavily upon the reputation
of the publishing professional to fulfill the requirement for public
trust. That all changed in November 2000 with the International Fear of
Flying Conference, Airborne 2000 in Vienna Austria. It was at this conference that professional fear of
flying therapists from around the world established the first of a set of
standards ("Golden Rules") for Fear of Flying Programs with hopes of
providing better public education to all fearful flyers. Here are
those principles and recommendations.

Golden Rules for Fear of Flying Treatment
(from
Airborne 2000 Conference)
 |
Providing
information about the technical aspects of flying is important. Flying
in the Comfort Zone accomplishes this in Therapeutic Learning Format which
is heavily illustrated with easy-to-learn and remember pictures. |
 |
Patients
should learn how to label their anxiety on a scale.
This is part of Flying in the Comfort Zone. |
 |
Education
should be provided about how fear manifests itself in the body.
This is provided in both our books and video. |
 |
Patients
should learn how to deal with thoughts and images and contrast them with
reality. Flying in the Comfort
Zone opens with lessons in these areas. |
 |
The
program should teach relaxation and breathing techniques.
Our program designed the relaxation techniques we teach to be used
specifically in distracting environments like airplanes. |
 |
Appropriate
humor should be used. Flying in
the comfort zone if full of humorous illustrations that teach a lesson. |
 |
Therapists
should have adequate training. Flying
in the Comfort Zone is developed and taught by a Ph.D. licensed (Wisconsin)
psychologist. He also holds commercial pilot and flight instructor
qualifications in aviation. |
 |
Encourage
patient's to take an active role. This
principle forms the fabric of our program. |
 |
Be
clear, empathic and understanding. Dr.
Tomaro's 14 years of successful live seminars speaks directly to this point. |
 |
Conduct
an escorted flight on an airline. Dr.
Tomaro has logged hundreds of hours in the air with fearful flyers.
The Virtual Reality flight is as close as we can come to this in a video
program. It was designed from his experience in the air with fearful
flyers. It is currently the only product of its kind in the world. |
